Our volunteers are the helping hands of the hospital

Their smiles and support assist in so many ways. The gift shop profits have resulted in many thousands of dollars of ‘extras’ to support patient and visitor comfort. And our wonderful team of Wayfinders wearing the blue “Can I Help You” vests meet and guide patients and visitors around the hospital, last year they donated 840 hours of service.

Our Story

Christchurch Hospital Volunteers was originally set up some 30 years ago offering a service to all the hospital community. Offering a sweet treat, the daily paper or a little gift purchase for a patient. In the early 1990’s it became a NZ Postal Agency.

The profit it generated was used to buy visitors chairs and this developed into much more. This inspired us to grow the little business and our donation list has grown with it. We have helped many families get through difficult times providing somewhere to sit with their loved one or to watch television with a loved one, sometimes it was just a chat with our kindly volunteers in the shop.

We also helped and valued our incredible nurses by donating study grants, paying course fees or travel expenses for conferences. And we continue to do this today.
